Doing a Literature Review

Doing a Literature Review: ReleIDg the Social Science Research Imagination (SAGE Study Skills Series)
Author: Christopher Hart ID: 0761959742

Review

`This book can provide an excellent framework for bolstering what is often an experiential process – doing a literature review. It is best seen alongside the supervisor, as a guide, through the multidimensional sea of academic literature’ – British Educational Research Journal

`I have been waiting for this book for five years. It sets out a number of important dimensions involved in the process of literature review and by clear signposting, diagrams, and examples will help the student to carry out her or his review more systematically. Learning how to carry out a literature review has always entailed the experiential. While this is a the best way of learning, it is only so providing that learning actually takes place during the experience (or by reflection afterwards). This book makes explicit those dimensions which could remain implicit or even missed by the student as they wade through all those books, papers, articles, and print-outs’ – Kevin Maguire, Nottingham Trent University

When I purchased this book, I was looking for a potential text for a short-course on writing the disseration I’m teaching. I really expected the standard "here’s how to search through the library and databases." This is simply much more that that. It’s less about how to do the review itself and more about how to think about your topic. In fact, Hart raises the questions I should have been asking myself–if only I had known–and my advisor wasn’t. How much better my work would have been if I’d had an understanding of how to analyze a text from various perspectives. Many texts offer advice on how to write but few talk about how to think about your question and how to fit it within the context of work in your discipline. Hart does this.

Hart, Chris. 1998. Doing a literature review. ReleIDg the social science imagination. London: Sage Publications.
Chris Hart’s guide to doing a literature review presents a comprehensive perspective on the literature review as a research tool. While it is addressed to scholars in the social sciences, this book is useful in most areas of design research. Hart discusses the role of literature in research. He explains how reviewing earlier work releases the imagination rather than constraining it. He shows how to classify and read research literature, how to analyze arguments, and how to organize and express ideas. He also teaches the reader useful ways to map and analyze the ideas that each body of literature reveals. Finally, he demonstrates in careful, clear stages how to develop and write the literature review. At each point, Hart develops a serious, well-reasoned explanation that helps the scholar to understand why each step is important and how to do it well.
Book review published in Design Research News, Volume 6, Number 5, May 2001 ISSN 1473-3862.

I have read several books on doing literature reviews. Except for this one, they were all about the quantitative style of review called meta-analysis.
This is a well-written and informative text, though it is a little too wordy for me to rate it excellent. It is the only book I could find that describes exactly how to produce the lit review section of a thesis. This is something that even books on dissertation writing tend to leave to your imagination.

The latest canon Star Wars novel, Dark Disciple actually comes from a script written by Katie Lucas, Matt Michnovetz, and Dave Filoni for The Clone Wars animated TV show before it was canceled. In Dark Disciple, the Jedi Council sends Quinlan Vos on a mission to recruit Asajj Ventress to help assassinate Count Dooku. I’ll try not to reveal too many spoilers, which is especially difficult for this book, and will focus on plot developments that happen during the first quarter of the novel.

Although Quinlan Vos and Asajj Ventress are both fan favorites, I’d never imagined that they’d appear together, much less in a Clone Wars novel. Yet, after having read the novel, the pairing seems natural. They’re both strong, sexy – yes, sexy – characters who have touched the Dark Side. Dark Disciple is a character study of how these two learn to trust and respect one another.

Before I go on, I want to reassure readers about Quinlan Vos. Both Vos and Ventress initially appeared in DarkHorse’s Republic comic series (no longer considered canon). Ventress became a key character on The Clone Wars TV show, showing more depth and nuance than the comic version. By the end of Season 5, she had turned her back on Count Dooku and had become a bounty hunter who sometimes worked with the Jedi. By contrast, many fans were disheartened by Quinlan Vos’ single appearance in “Hunt for Ziro” because he came across as a shallow beach bum rather than the brooding, sensual Jedi who had flirted with the Dark Side.

Fortunately, Dark Disciple does much to rehabilitate Quinlan’s character. The Quinlan Vos in Dark Disciple isn’t an exact copy of the one from the Republic comics, but it’s clear that the comics inspired Katie Lucas and Christie Golden.
Vos has been one of my favorite characters in the EU when he first appeared in the Dark Horse comics. His story was already established; that is up until he disappeared into the universe after order 66. Even hints of children with the woman he loved in the Dark horse universe in the Legacy run. So when Disney destroyed everything that had been established in the previous twenty years and turned the EU into Legends I really tried to hate this novel. The other character in the novel Ventress in the Dark Horse universe just flew off into space and disappeared. The Clone Wars series developed her character more and brought her into the Canon of Star Wars for everyone to enjoy. In all her manipulative beautiful evil ways. The series giving her a deeper history and linking her with the Night Sisters. Again I tried to hate this novel, as a matter of fact, up until the last twenty pages I thought that Golden had taken one of my favorite characters and completely destroyed him. She had definitely taken Ventress and developed her into a richer character for us to enjoy. We really get into her character within this novel. Saying all that, this novel is still going to make a lot of fans of the old Canon completely furious. I don’t want to give away any spoilers so I will leave it at that. The novel is based off of three Clone Wars episodes that never made it to air. The novel takes those episodes and expands them into a large epic that would of been great to actually see. Some stuff I wonder how it would of actually made it onto TV especially into cartoon network. You will understand once you read the novel. One of my favorite scenes in the book is how the bounty hunters are used in this novel and Golden references the Clone Wars episodes where Ventress humiliates Fett.

Author: Naomi Novik ID: B00XQBBRQQ

Naomi Novik, author of the New York Times best-selling and critically acclaimed Temeraire novels, introduces a bold new world rooted in folk stories and legends, as elemental as a Grimm fairy tale. “Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every 10 years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.” Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life. Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for 10 years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows – everyone knows – that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia – all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her. But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.

Having been a fan of Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series for many years, I have often wondered what she would do if she ever decided to write something else. After all, this is a woman who studied English Literature at Brown University, holds a degree in Computer Science from Columbia, and wasn’t afraid to show her geeky side as a game designer on Neverwinter Nights. That’s a pretty awesome combination in my book and when she chose to write the Temeraire series, a fantasy/historical mashup combining the concept of intelligent dragons working as a sort of Air Force with wartime forces in the Napoleonic era, well…I was hooked.

So now comes this new novel and my bottom line verdict is that it is fantastic. It’s straight fantasy but absolutely reminds one of that nostalgic feeling of fairy tales you read (or were read to you) from childhood. After reading the opening two chapters I thought I was on my way into just such a fairy tale, but it wasn’t long before any ideas I had about predicting where this was going were thrown out of the proverbial window. The plot begins as a twist in the age-old concept of a young maiden being picked every ten years by the village elders to sacrifice to the dragon in order to buy its protection. The twist is that this time it’s not an actual dragon but a renowned wizard who requires the sacrifice. And he doesn’t select the pretty young maiden that everybody was planning on but instead chooses Agneieszka, our protagonist, and it is though her eyes that we see the story unfold.

OK…interesting twist but I still thought I knew where the plot was going. I was wrong.

No spoilers from me but suffice it to say that this novel kept me turning the pages way past my bedtime. Ms.
Uprooted is a comfortable, homey YA fantasy, reminiscent of Patricia McKillip’s work. It’s predictable, but pleasantly so. The narrator/heroine Agnieszka lives in a vaguely Russian village at the edge of a sinister wood. Every ten years, the local sorcerer/lord known as the Dragon chooses a village girl to live in his tower. When their term is up, the girls come home educated and refined, with purses full of silver for their dowries. They briefly visit their parents, then move to larger cities that have better opportunities. The chosen girl is always a local belle. While Agnieszka was growing up, everyone expected her best friend Kasia to be the Dragon’s next choice. Kasia is the most beautiful girl, and the most skilled in all the domestic arts (her parents made sure she was trained to serve a nobleman). No one expects the Dragon to choose Agnieszka, who is perpetually muddy and untidy, and whose only skill seems to be finding the unexpected, whether fruit out of season or more often, trouble.

Of course, the Dragon’s choosing spell lands on Agnieszka. Once in the tower, Agnieszka discovers that the returning servants told the truth when they claimed the Dragon didn’t molest them. However, Agnieszka’s inability to cook, clean, or even dress neatly, coupled with her plain face and low social status, leads the fastidious Dragon to utter an endless stream of sarcastic comments typical of a certain kind of romance hero. Agnieszka also finds it very hard to learn even the simplest spells. (Interestingly, she’s already literate.) But Agnieszka does have magical ability. Lots of it. It’s just a *feminine* magical ability: Organic, intuitive, inconsistent, largely nonverbal, nurturing, and cooperative.
I picked this up on a lark because I was snatched by the premise. I could tell right away that the main relationship, the critical point of interest, was going to be between the Dragon and the protagonist. At least, that’s what I’d hoped for. Stories about two very different people who are forced to live and work together and then gradually come to understanding and affection as a result are my very favorites to read and write.
First, I want to explain that I found the actual writing, the turn of phrase in this book, to be FANTASTIC. Beautiful, detailed, living imagery; such creative and tactile uses for magic. The author makes a real world, with real history, and the Woods are absolutely chilling–a breathing, moving villain in the story, though faceless. One becomes very afraid of this Wood as one reads, feeling its darkness creep up in the shadows all around. That writing is what kept me reading for the majority of the book, nonstop, even past one red flag, and a plot detour I didn’t really feel like taking. (Spoilers ahead)
I must confess, as I was reading the first few chapters, a strange feeling came over me–one that I expressed to a friend of mine who is an avid reader of fanfiction. It almost seemed, at first, that this was a story that had been converted from a fanfiction about Marvel’s Loki. The Dragon just seemed so very like him in some respects. However, he didn’t develop. I kept waiting for him to do so–because he starts out as frightening and a little abusive, but then loses all his fangs and claws almost right away in two shows of startlement and clumsiness. Beyond that point, he’s just insulting, but none of his insults carried any sting for me, though they manage to frustrate the protagonist.

Studying law and found this book hard to master. The chapters are very dense and un-organized. There is almost information overload going on here. However it will help you pass a course related to the subject, just make sure you have a lot of time on your hands and are computer friendly.

Difficult to read. Very boring even though the subject is interesting. I agree with another reviewer who thought the material is poorly organized. This is one of the most badly written college textbooks I’ve ever used. You probably are required to read this for a course, so grit your teeth and get through it.

Seriously. This is such a terribly boring text…. But there is nothing exciting about law citation.

Pick a new career path if you’re looking for excitement. Paralegals are the grunts and get no glory. This book is proof.

Review

“Spiritual scholar Dale (The Subtle Body) offers a comprehensive guide for practitioners of energy healing. There’s a cornucopia of healing modalities and practices, she explains, ranging from Eastern and Western medicine to field-based healing and bodywork . . .Written in a clear and compassionate yet businesslike tone, this work will be a go-to guide for anyone considering energy healing as a vocation or avocation.”
Publishers Weekly, June 2013

“Cyndi Dale has accomplished something that I haven’t yet seen done by any other author for this genre. She masterfully presents a very personable, understandable, and comprehensive exploration of the science and practice of energy medicine from ancient times through now. This is one of the most understandable explanations of how energy medicine therapies work that I have ever read.”
Cynthia Hutchison, Director of the Healing Touch Program

“The Subtle Body Practice Manual is pure, healing treasure-and everyone from doctors and healthcare practitioners to parents and teachers will find life-changing information and practices in these pages. An invaluable resource.
Christiane Northrup, M.D., OB/GYN physician and author of the New York Times bestsellers Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause

“Cyndi Dale is clearly the 21st century expert on energy medicine-she takes the reader to the leading edge of this emerging, exciting field with her brilliant insight and intuition. This is the perfect encyclopedic guide to harnessing the energetic wisdom of both ancient and modern traditions in a hands-on way. This book contains an incredible amount of info. You can read it cover to cover or chapters at a time and its always going to please. The ONLY real complaint I would have is that its too heavy! Lol but worth it. This and the companion book by Dale, The Subtle Body, are an essential book combo for any energyworker. A++

It is a great guide for a practitioner in the holistic field. It is sort of a repetition of her book of Anatomy.

This is a textbook sized powerhouse of information in the subtle energy body and practices. I have read a lot on it, but this is the best book I have read on the subject. A bookshelf find!

It’s a little bizarre that a popular (at least according to sales figures) book about passing along media or commentary has gone over a month without having a review posted. I think it’s because this is an ingenious, yet jam-packed book that looks at online participation and the sharing of information from a unique perspective that just plain forces you to think. This is not a quick read.

While there are plenty of social media books out that look at the "new phenomenon" of sharing as an organizational strategy or as platforms of tools as compelling new ways to share, the authors of "Spreadable Media" look more at the material itself that is or isn’t being shared. What characteristics of materials make people want to spread them? What’s in it for the sharer? When people read, hear or watch something that makes them want to circulate it, what triggers that decision? The authors point out there’s nothing really new about this motivation. The passing down of keepsakes, family heirlooms, newspaper articles, scrapbooks, family trees, etc. has gone on for generations. First the photocopier and now social media platforms have just made it easier and almost instantaneous.

The main focus of the book is on the broadcast, mass-media business model of "stickiness" of content vs. the parallel concept of "spreadability." It’s becoming increIDgly apparent that if media doesn’t spread today, it’s dead–like a film/song/book/work of art/best practice no one sees/hears/reads/studies/tries.
First of all, I want to commend Henry Jenkins, Sam Ford, and Joshua Green on their 46-page Introduction that, all by itself, is worth more than the cost of the book while "setting the table" for an even more substantial feast of information, insights, and counsel in the seven chapters that follow.

As they explain, their book "examines the emerging hybrid model of [content] circulation, where a mix of top-down and bottom-up forces determine how material is shared across and among cultures in far more participatory (and messier) ways…This shift from distribution to circulation signals a movement toward a more participatory model of culture, one which sees the public not as simply consumer of preconstructed messages [e.g. book reviews of this book] but as people who are shaping, sharing, reframing, and remixing media content in ways which might not have been previously imagined."

In this context, I am reminded of Henry Chesbrough and the open business model for which he is so widely and justifiably renowned. As he explains in Open Innovation (2005), "An open business model uses this new division of innovation labor – both in the creation of value and in the capture of a portion of that value. Open models create value by leveraging many more ideas, due to their inclusion of a variety of external concepts. Open models can also enable greater value capture, by using a key asset, resource, or position not only in the company’s own business model but also in other companies businesses.
I read this book through the lens of a content marketing practitioner that was curious what new insight Henry Jenkins and his co-authors would add to the information and guidance that’s already available on this topic — both online and in other books.

The authors believe that "if it doesn’t spread, it’s dead." To me, that’s an oversimplified explanation of today’s environment. Also, most of their case studies are from the American entertainment industry. In contrast, I’m more interested in how these `spreadable media’ scenarios apply to commercial (corporate brand) storytelling.

What’s their primary focal point? The author’s acknowledgement of the "participatory culture" of the Internet is a reoccuring theme throughout the book. Likewise, they remind us how the leadership of Big Media corporations have historically misunderstood or intentionally resisted this phenomena — often at their own peril.

Moreover, while the basic concept of sharing and syndication is not new, those people who do much of the `social’ sharing today are not sanctioned or encouraged by the content creator. To some people within the media industry, that’s very unsettling. But the authors present a somewhat optimistic outlook — believing that those fears will dissipate over time.

At the offset they’re actually quite hopeful that socioeconomic advancement is likely, as a result of these progressive changes to the status quo. They say "The growth of networked communication, especially when coupled with the practices of participatory culture, provides a range of new resources and facilitates new interventions for a variety of groups who have long struggled to have their voices heard.

I am most impressed with how Rogers speaks to me through his words. This is not a dry, rational, theoretical book – this book truly is a personal dialogue with the reader, allowing us to gain insight into the thinking and wisdom of one great visionary. How grateful we can be, that we no longer are treated as objects, numbers, problems to be labeled and fixed, when we see a therapist. What a huge shift Rogers has brought about in how to treat another person, not only in therapy, but in daily life! This is an extremely insightful book, not only for all counsellors, but for anyone who prides him/herself as being a good friend and listener. Read this, and you will be swept away.

Like all Rogerian work, this is another masterpiece to add to your collection. Easy, enjoyable, and flows beautifully. A must read for the psychology, social work student. An excellent introductory book for the inspiring Humanistic psychologist. Highly recommend On Becoming A Person, by Rogers. Enjoy!

This is a wonderful read for people who are interested in understanding dialogical relationship. It will not only benefit people working in the field of counselling/psychotherapy but will be enlightening to anyone interested in meeting the other with genuine interest and respect. Rogers highlights an attitude towards one’s self and to others, not techniques to be pulled out of a hat and in essence decribes a way of being – a lived experience rather than doing something to someone.

Burrhus Frederic Skinner (1904-1990) was an American psychologist, social philosopher, and author. He was a Professor of Psychology at Harvard University from 1958 until his retirement in 1974, and perhaps the most influential behaviorist of the 20th century. His most famous books are Verbal Behavior, Beyond Freedom & Dignity and Walden Two.

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"To what extent is it helpful to be told, ‘He drinks because he is thirsty’? If to be thirsty means nothing more than to have a tendency to drink, this is mere redundancy. If it means that he drinks because of a state of thirst, an inner causal event is invoked. If this state is purely inferential … it cannot serve as an explanation." (Pg. 33)
"Trait-names begin as adjectives–‘intelligent,’ ‘aggressive,’ ‘disorganized,’… and so on… But at no point in such a series do we make contact with any event outside the behavior itself which justifies the claim of a causal connection." (Pg. 202)
"We cannot account for suicide as a simple response… No one jumps into a brook to bring his life to an end because the same behavior had a similar consequence in the past… Fortunately we need not decide this issue to make the present point." (Pg.

The Turner House MP3 CD – April 15, 2015
Author: Visit ‘s Angela Flournoy Page ID: 150461268X

Review

”An expansive and ambitious novel that descends through the generations of one family’s history to achieve real poignancy and power.” –T. C. Boyle, New York Times bestselling author of The Women

”Utterly moving and tough as nails, The Turner House is a love story as immense as the family it describes and as complicated as the city that made them. A clear-sighted ode to the bonds that make and break us, to resilience across generations, to shared joys and solitary struggles, Flournoy’s debut is as fresh and bold as they come.” –Ayana Mathis, New York Times bestselling author of The Twelve Tribes of Hattie

The Turner House is a marvelous novel introducing a family of irresistible characters. Angela Flournoy is a magician – here is a story that is charming and funny while being whip-smart and profound. Laced through are the hard facts of history and the mysterious workings of the human heart. The magic begins with the extraordinary first chapter and lasts to the very last page. This is a thrilling debut from a writer to watch.” –Tayari Jones, author of Silver Sparrow

”A complicated portrait of the modern American family emerges in Flournoy’s debut novel…Flournoy’s writing is precise and sharp…The novel draws readers to the Turner family almost magnetically. A talent to watch.” —Kirkus Reviews

”Angela Flournoy’s brilliant [book] The Turner House is about no less than the joy and aggravation of being a human being in a large family, in a house, in a city, on this earth. This book is so beautifully written, so perfectly observed and heard – it’s about aging and parenthood and above all that misunderstood lifelong union, siblinghood – but it’s also pure pleasure to read: funny, heartbreaking, with the sort of characters you’ll miss like family when you finish. The Turner House is an absolutely wonderful novel.” –Elizabeth McCracken, author of The Giant’s House

”Angela Flournoy’s The Turner House is masterful: a novel full of history and lies and the myths that can bring a family together, or tear it apart. There are touches of grace and humor in this generous and humane portrait of a family, and a city, in transition. This is a beautiful, elegant, and living novel, one that you will savor until the last, moving paragraph.” –Daniel Alarcón, author of At Night We Walk in Circles

”Angela Flournoy’s extraordinary debut novel, The Turner House, is as compelling, unforgettable, and beautifully told a story as I’ve read in ages. The real and the supernatural, the hardships and hard won triumphs of the tightly knit, at times warring Turner clan will pull you close to this family’s generous, dignified heart. While each of the thirteen siblings (and their parents) could carry a book on his or her own, here they remain indelibly linked by the complicated bonds of history and belonging – and by the promises of their heartbreak city, Detroit.” –Cristina Garcia, author of Dreaming in Cuban

My first major impression of Angela Flournoy’s writing after reading her debut novel <i>Turner House</i> is that her third-person narrator’s tone and style remind me very much of the narrators in Jane Austen’s novels (i.e. textual examples from <i>Emma</i>, <i>Persuasion</i> and <i>Pride and Prejudice</i> formed the basis for this comparison as I read). I’ve never felt compelled to draw a comparison to Austen’s work before in reviewing a book, and I’ve read all of her work with the notable exception of <i>Mansfield Park</i>. I don’t want to strain the comparison too far. What I found was that the narrator of this story frequently employed the same type of wit seen often in Austen’s work, and Flournoy’s wit was every bit as sharp — in fact, I think Flournoy’s humor is richer and funnier.

Most significantly, Flournoy’s literary craft matched the best of Austen’s in her narrator’s equally effective deployment of sharp humor to fully achieve two objectives with unusual success:

(1) to richly contextualize the story — enriching the reader’s understanding of the peculiarities of its setting in time, place, class, culture, etc., and;
(2) as one of the chief literary techniques employed to add nuance and depth to her characters’ development with the virtue of both textual efficiency and vivid precision.

Regardless of whether you perceive any Austen-esque elements in <i>Turner House</i>, I believe that fans of Jane Austen’s novels — and/or just top-flight literary fiction in general — are highly likely to find reading it worthwhile because of these masterful qualities Flountroy displays in her debut.
