I’ve taken several firefighter civil service exams in the past, but never "studied" for them because the information topics were so easy. However, this was my first run at a police exam, and I had heard that they include memorization pieces and a few more difficult topics.

Boy am I glad I did! There are 4 practice tests, and the initial diagnostic test really opened my eyes to just how picky and tricky these questions can be. I’m normally an extremely good test-taker, but this book showed me the sly ways questions can be tweaked with just a simple word change.

Upon taking my actual exam, I was pleasantly surprised – All of the practice tests in this book are 150 questions long, my exam was only 75. The memorization exercises showed me that it wasn’t as scary as I previously thought.

My real exam actually lacked a lot of what this book prepares you for (facial recognition, grammar testing, sentence ordering) so if anything, I was OVER-prepared.

Bottom line is this – if you’re serious about a police career and want to do well on the exam, going through every page of this book can only help you – and for only $13 it’s a steal.

If you can, get the 4th edition, it’s way easier to read and this edition is not recommended by any of my teachers. They all said get the 4th edition, so I’m returning this one and getting the 4th. Reading this is way too complicated and way more than we need to know for the boards/job, the 4th gives you everything in an easier to understand language and doesn’t confuse you further (unlike this one).

In all honesty, this textbook is horrible. I, along with many online students, find the textbook too vague to be a learning material. Throughout most chapters, the book will discuss a topic and either loosely describe the concept, or fail to describe it at all. Please excuse the poor analogy, but while discussing this problem, a student and I agreed that the formula is similar to saying: "The sky is not blue because of the oceans," yet no explanation as to why the sky is blue is present. A more direct example would be the topics of radiographic contrast and subject contrast. In Brown’s book, the explanation for both ideas is explained in two SENTENCES. In Lisa Lavin’s fourth edition radiography book, the subjects are given two PAGES. That vagueness, along with multiple typos and no definitions, made learning each topic much more difficult, and I was very disappointed that I had to buy Lisa Lavin’s fourth edition just to gain a grasp of the subjects. Perhaps this style is perfect for the student that just wants to fly through the course, but it is not suitable for the student that actually wants to learn these concepts.

The second half of this text regarding radiographic positioning is excellent. Clear information and photos are provided. The first half of this text is of very limited use to me as a professor of a veterinary radiography course at an accrediated veterinary technology program. My students have struggled to obtain minimal useful and understandablel information from this text. It is very frustrating! As others have suggested, buy the 4th edition of this text. Avoid this one. I find the information presented in the first half to be muddled, poorly organized, and unclear.
