Placebo Effects: Understanding the mechanisms in health and disease 2nd Edition Pdf Download

Placebo Effects: Understanding the mechanisms in health and disease 2nd Edition
Author: Fabrizio Benedetti ID: 0198705085

Review

Review from previous edition: “Benedetti is highly analytical in his approach and, at the same time, has the ability to explain complex matters so that they are easily understood. This book should be a must for all who struggle to make sense out of the intriguing phenomenon we call placebo.” –Pharmaceutical Press December 2009

“Benedetti’s book is a lucid and extensive review entrenched in the neuroscience of placebo research and heralding the importance of this area of study.” –PsycCRITIQUIES August 2009

“… comprehensive and thoughtful volume … All physicians could learn much from this volume.” –New England Journal of Medicine April 2009

“The breadth of topics addressed … make this book an important read for anyone in the medical field.” –Journal of the Neurological Sciences

About the Author

Fabrizio Benedetti, Professor of Neurophysiology and Human Physiology, Department of Neuroscience, University of Turin Medical School, Italy

He received the Medical Doctor (MD) degree in 1981 from the University of Turin Medical School. In 1984, he received a Silbert International Award from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). In the 1980s and 1990s, he worked in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA and was a visiting professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Texas in Dallas. He has been Professor of Neurophysiology and Human Physiology at the University of Turin Medical School since 1999. He has been a member of the six-strong group on placebo of the Mind-Brain-Behavior Initiative at Harvard University, and a consultant for the Placebo Project at the US National Institute of Health. He has been nominated a member of the Academy of Europe and of the European Dana Alliance for the Brain. His current scientific interests are the placebo effect across diseases, pain in dementia, and intraoperative neurophysiology for mapping the human brain.

Paperback: 432 pagesPublisher: Oxford University Press; 2 edition (November 25, 2014)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0198705085ISBN-13: 978-0198705086 Product Dimensions: 9.1 x 0.9 x 6 inches Shipping Weight: 1.4 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #112,628 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #22 in Books > Textbooks > Medicine & Health Sciences > Medicine > Clinical > Pain Medicine #36 in Books > Medical Books > Pharmacology > Pain Medicine #57 in Books > Textbooks > Medicine & Health Sciences > Medicine > Basic Sciences > Neuroscience

Written by a premier expert, the book is an exhaustive treatment of the subject, in small type. An excellent book for anyone doing medical research. I personally found the book somewhat condescending in good western medical tradition. Statements such as: "The history of medicine is basically a history of placebos, as most medical interventions were nothing but placebos…" badly misjudge herbal medicine traditions worldwide. The scope of the book is very narrow and does not consider "mind control of the body" knowledge of other cultures. Nor does it recognize the considerable effect of hormesis on the subject.

About the Author

Thomas Pavitte, a graphic designer and experimental artist, uses simple techniques to create highly complex pieces. He set an unofficial record for the most complex dot-to-dot drawing with his 6,239-dot version of the Mona Lisa. He lives in Melbourne, Australia.

Paperback: 48 pagesPublisher: Thunder Bay Press; Csm edition (August 5, 2014)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1626860858ISBN-13: 978-1626860858 Product Dimensions: 0.2 x 12 x 14 inches Shipping Weight: 14.9 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #6,541 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #16 in Books > Humor & Entertainment > Puzzles & Games > Puzzles #31 in Books > Humor & Entertainment > Pop Culture > Art

Great book the only issue I had is the numbers are very hard to see. Art work is awesome. Unless you have great vision or very good glasses and a well lit area I would not recommend this book.

I brought the Cityscapes book to our family Christmas. The 30-somethings jumped in on it immediately. They even set up timing tests to see who could finish first. Two of the four 30-somethings are architects, but it was the retailer who won the contest. Good fun and they have made me promise to bring the Animal and Masterpieces to the next family gathering in June.

I hung a couple of completed cities in my office and had numerous comments and questions about where I got the book.

Thumbs up, 5 stars and all the other superlatives you can think of.

These are a challenge and take a while to complete. Very different concept than most dot-to-dot puzzles. Some turn out better than others. Unless one has a lot of time, these puzzles can take several days to complete. Still haven’t discovered the best writing instrument to use. I believe using a pen or pencil with a bit broader tip gives a better effect. What’s so different about these puzzles? In most dot-to-dot puzzles, you do not cross lines you’ve already drawn. These are the opposite. One can go back and forth over lines previously drawn. I need a magnifying glass which makes doing the puzzles cumbersome. Holding a magnifying glass in one and and a writing instrument in the other can be difficult, especially if one has not secured the page. The pages are larger than normal. I find it necessary to remove them from the book. They’re interesting, but can be frustrating at the same time, mainly because the numbers are so small and so lightly printed.
